To Blogroll or Not To Blogroll?

…that is the question.

After finding the IndieWeb community, I started thinking back to what blogging was years ago, old school blogging. Back then, blogrolls were a great way to find interesting blogs, and it was a great way to showcase the blogs you enjoyed reading.

Before I ever wrote a blog post myself, I liked reading them, and blogrolls on the sidebars of Blogger blogs were one way I found new ones to check out. (That’s quite a mouthful, huh?)

Even before I had regular access to the internet, I read blogs when I had a chance for some computer time. (It’s funny to think about, but back then I would go to the public library to use a computer for an hour.)

Since I started actively working on this blog again, I’ve considered starting a blogroll.

There are a ton of positive things about blogrolls:

  • easy access to blog links you want to read
  • sharing those blogs with others
  • a sense of community

…but there are some negatives too, and so far the negatives have won out.

I recently wrote “When Enjoyment Becomes Obligation“, which is a post about how even enjoyable things can cease to be so if they become an obligation. Honestly, I think that’s why I am hesitant to create a blogroll.

Once I create a blogroll, then it’s something I’d have to maintain (or allow to be stagnant). I wouldn’t put it past me to avoid my own blog because of the pressure I’d put on myself with thoughts like “I really need to update that blogroll”. It may sound silly, but that’s how it is sometimes.

For now I’m not going to create a blogroll here on my blog. I’m considering an alternative and I’ll update this post with a link if I decide to do it. I’m going to proceed with blogging and pluging in links to awesome posts when they’re applicable to what I’m writing about.

If you’re trying to decide if you want a blogroll or not, the posts below might help you decide. :
