neon sign that says change

The Mindset of Incremental Change

Before a shift in my mindset, I wouldn’t have went to the gym this morning. My back and hip flexors were so tight and I didn’t think I’d be able to do anything. It would have been easy not to go.

In the past few weeks, I’ve worked hard to improve my life in several areas. My mindset has played a huge role in propelling me forward in areas I am focusing on. I got bogged down a lot before with overthinking things, perfectionism, and all or nothing thinking. It didn’t serve me, and it kept me spinning my wheels, frustrated, and made it caused me to freeze up, unsure of what to do.

This morning, a friend of mine mentioned that “every little thing counts”, and you know what, it does.

I’ve heard it before, and you probably have too. In fact, I have heard it so many ways, but I didn’t take it to heart till recently. I mean, I’d say some version of it, but I only ever believed that was true for other people and it wasn’t for me. You see, I never gave myself that same grace or encouragement I could give others. Sure, I’d try, but I could never make that mindset shift.

  • everything counts
  • done poorly is better than not done at all
  • just try to get 1% better
  • something is better than nothing

I’m sure there are more, those are just the ones that have been drilled into my head, but somehow I could never put it into practice. Knowing somethign with your head is different than something changing the way you think, believe, and act. Knowing something is different than having a shift in your mindset.

The mindset of incremental change is something I wished I’d have put into practice a long time ago, but here we are. I can’t change the past, but I can focus on small, real, consistent changes going forward.  And so can you.
