This blog post is an entry for the October 2025 IndieWeb Movie Club, and the movie for this month is Hackers(1995), hosted by Benji.
The first time I watched the movie Hackers was when it came out on VHS, or shortly after. I was around 14 or 15, and I loved the movie. At the time, I wasn’t into computers and didn’t really have access to one regularly, but the movie fascinated me.
I didn’t really understand at the time, but I understand now.
Hackers was the next movie in a line of movies with the same central idea: people living outside of societal norms. Those people didn’t fit inside a box, neatly wrapped with a bow on top. They were misunderstood.
I haven’t always felt understood.
I didn’t connect those dots back then, but I can now.
What are the other movies I’m talking about, you ask?
All of these movies have themes of living outside societal norms and rebellion, with the main characters fighting against corruption, censorship, and class. They all have that “Stick it to the Man” energy.
- Dirty Dancing (1987) – Rebellion against class and hypocrisy.
- Gleaming the Cube (1989) – Teen angst and rebellion against corruption.
- Pump Up the Volume (1990) – Rebellion against censorship and corruption.
Then, there’s Hackers (1995)
Hackers is about a group of misfits who live outside the lines and value freedom and information more than lawfulness. They have a code (and write code, funny enough), but that code falls outside of societal norms. And even though they’re rejected by larger society and hunted by the FBI, they go to war against corporate greed and corruption, for the good of the very society that fails to understand them.
And as a bonus…
- Good Will Hunting (1997) – Good Will Hunting is a little different than the other movies on my list, but the theme of people living outside societal norms fits. Will is a Genius who works as a janitor at a prestigious university, but he grew up poor, and because of his socioeconomic status, he was guarded and doubted himself. In a more fair world, Will would have grown up in a stable, more secure environment, and had that happened, he could have attended the very University he was a janitor for. Will stayed on the fringes of society because it was comfortable. While the other movies I mentioned are about people fighting against society, villians, and corruption, in Good Will Hunting, Will was fighting against himself.
What are you waiting for? Go and watch Hackers, then watch the rest of my list!
