How to Recover From an Off Day

If you thought this was going to be informative, you may or may not be right. I guess we’ll see by the end of this post. I should have put a question mark at the end of that title because I’m asking the question as much as I’m trying to answer it.

Ever have one of those days where everything is just off? I had one of those days yesterday. I literally did everything I wanted to accomplish halfway. I mean, not half donkeyed, half way done. I started everything, but I finished nothing. Well, I did complete a blog post here, but it wasn’t the one I had started. I just did another one, and the half done one was banished to drafts.

I can’t really say what will fix days like that, but I do have list of what not to do:

  • Don’t get stuck and have multiple days like this in a row.
  • Don’t get caught up in perfect, just get it done. You can always go back and do something differently later. (If it’s writing, that’s what editing is for!)
  • Don’t avoid your tasks with useless distractions. (Are the distractions your problem to begin with? I know they played a big part in the day I had yesterday.)
  • Don’t avoid your tasks with other tasks like cleaning instead of writing, or whatever your version is. Maybe your version is writing instead of cleaning. Who knows? Just don’t do it. Don’t get caught up doing stuff to avoid the things you need and/or want to do.
  • Don’t talk about your tasks like you dread them. Don’t “should”, “have to”, or “need to” yourself to death until you are avoiding your tasks like the plague.
  • Listen to your body, your brain, and your needs, but don’t let emotions rule your life. Learn some regulation techniques, figure out what you truely need, and then show yourself who’s boss!

Now that we’ve went over what not to do, lets figure out what we can do. What can help? (I might know a few things you can try.)

  • Take a shower, get dressed, and pretend you’re starting your day over. Showers can help you regulate and it gives your brain a mental reset.
  • Take a power nap and let your brain rest. (Do not sleep your day or mental fortitude away, just a short nap, and if you can’t do a short nap, do not lay down. I repeat do not lay down!)
  • Hydrate. Your brain needs water to function properly. (No, in this case coffee is not water. Hydtrate first, then dyhdrate with coffee later. Ummmmm, I mean caffinate, caffinate later. )
  • Caffinate (Don’t look at me like that, it’s later.)

Hopefully something in here helps you and if it doesn’t, at least you know you’re not the only one to have a day like I had yesterday. And if you need more convincing here, listen to this.
