A Little Snow with My Coffee

Recently, I’ve gotten in the habit of waking up somewhere between midnight and 3 am, staying up for a while, having a cup of coffee, and then continuing my sleep. This morning I followed this pattern, waking at 2:30 am. I made coffee, I enjoyed a couple of cups, I had breakfast, then I drifted back off to sleep on this lovely Sunday morning.

I intended to sleep until I awoke, and then attend church online again since my sons have been sick, and one still is. It’s been a terrible flu season so far, but that’s a story for another day.

My husband woke me up about 20 minutes ago, “It’s snowing!” We’d been talking about the forecast: “Will it snow?” “Seems too warm.” “They say it’s going to”… You know how it is when expecting snow in a place where it rarely happens, or if you don’t know, at least you can imagine. This is two years in a row, now, that it’s snowed for a day. It’s quite unusual for it to be this frequent.

I have a love/hate relationship with snow now that I’m older. It brings back memories of sledding, making snowmen, and enjoying hot chocolate after being outside. It also makes me think back on the few snow days my sons have had, how even last year, it brought back childlike joy in them, and I enjoyed a pause for reflection that you can read about here. But I don’t handle the cold as well as I used to, and it’s hard not to think about how it poses more of a risk to drivers and to our more vulnerable communities. Like I said before, love/hate.

This morning I’m grateful for the memories that the snow highlights, for a wonderful cup of coffee while I sit and reflect and watch the snow flurries, and for all of the blessings God has provided.
