Updated This Blog’s Homepage

Today I took a look at this blog’s homepage and decided to give it a facelift.

What Was Wrong With The Homepage?

A few things were bothering me:

  • Too big of a wall of text on the homepage.
  • There was text that should be in another page or blog post instead of on the homepage.
  • The link to the blog didn’t stand out enough.
  • The call to action at the bottom of the page was weak.
  • I wanted to have the search bar in the main content area.
  • I wanted there to be a few links, aside from the main navigation, for readers to click on easily.

What Changes Did I Make?

  • After I had my list ready, I got to work. I cut a big chunk of text out of the homepage text and moved it to blog origin.
  • I moved the search bar from the sidebar to just under the link to the blog on the homepage.
  • I made the link to the blog stand out more, using a button the color of the background color of the blog. Teal at the time of this writing.
  • I created a section of links for readers to explore using a bulleted list of links.
  • I also added a quick note in a quote block directing readers to the main navigation based on what type of device is being used.

I really like the changes I made to the homepage. I think it looks nicer, it’s more interesting, and it’s more functional. I’d like to think it’s inviting without being overwhelming and functional but not sterile.

What do you think?
